Chapter Fifteen

Charlotte agonized over her dress choice for tonight’s dinner. It was vacation, after all, and though she’d packed a few nice outfits, most of her clothing was bathing suits or cover-ups. Sure, she had some casual touristy looks and outfits that could become evening wear with a few accessories, but she really didn’t have anything formal. Except her green dress which she loved, but it was a little revealing. Too revealing?

She toweled off from the shower and began to get ready, taking extra time on her eye makeup and lip gloss choice. She wanted to look nice tonight—she wanted to look good for Lexi. Lexi. Who she’d thought of all day while on the island. Who she thought of ceaselessly while she was zoning out on the horseback ride along the beach, which was a bad idea since she nearly got bucked off at one point, but still, even then her mind was on Lexi, not on hitting the rough sand below.

She’d spent the better part of today daydreaming about those endless blue eyes and soft lips. And the look of disappointment on those lips when she’d said she was leaving early. It was the same disappointment Charlotte felt in her own stomach. Her gut ached and her heart broke. She’d had so much heartbreak this year, and she wasn’t sure how much more she could take.

She thought about that now. This tryst with Lexi was leading her straight to Heartbreak City, with a population of one. She knew in her heart of hearts that she’d broken things off with Lexi in their youth to save Lexi from the pain she knew Lexi’d suffer while she was gone, but she’d been shocked at how visceral her own pain had been. She realized she’d never quite healed, because having Lexi back in her life these days made her feel whole in a way she hadn’t since she’d left her. Which was exactly what she was about to do again—she would be leaving, again. And that thought killed her.

She slipped on her dress and worked the side zipper until it was entirely closed. She smoothed down the fabric over her hips and breasts and slipped on her heels. She dug through her closet for a clutch, because this dress did not have pockets. It was so tight it didn’t even allow for panty lines, something that gave her more pause than usual considering Lexi would be in the room. Did she really want to be without panties around Lexi? Yes. But also, maybe not.

She stepped in front of the mirror and bounced the light curl she’d worked into the ends of her hair. She took in a deep breath and watched the dress strain to contain her chest. The heart-shaped neckline was deeper than she’d usually go with, but the real showstopper of this dress was the thigh-high slit on the left. Charlotte was grateful she’d inherited her mother’s natural athleticism. Her leg looked toned from her minimal exercise routine, and tanned from her time in the sun this week.
